Orange LEDs

Orange sits between red and amber on the spectrum.

LED SYMBOLTriangle points from anode to cathode; the arrows show light leaving the part.

About orange LEDs

Orange sits between red and amber at about 600 to 610 nm, with a forward voltage near 2.0 V. Many suppliers use the words orange and amber loosely, so check the wavelength.

Uses

  • Warning and caution lights
  • Status indicators that must differ from red and green
  • Warm accent lighting

Behaviour

The colour can shift a little with current and temperature, becoming more reddish as the chip warms. A resistor chosen for 10 to 15 mA keeps the shift small and the part cooler.

REMEMBER
Colour is set by the semiconductor material, not by the plastic lens.

Try it yourself

Sketch the circuit on paper first, calculate the values, then build it on a solderless breadboard using a low-voltage supply. Measure with a multimeter before you make anything permanent.
