Buck Converters for LEDs
Buck converters step voltage down efficiently.
LED SYMBOLTriangle points from anode to cathode; the arrows show light leaving the part.
Efficient step-down
A buck converter switches the input on and off rapidly through an inductor and filters the result, creating a lower voltage with little wasted energy, often 85 to 95 percent efficient.
Example
Stepping 24 V to 5 V at 1 A needs 5 W out. A linear regulator would waste 19 W, whereas a buck converter loses under 1 W.
- Buck LED drivers regulate current, not voltage.
- Switching creates some electrical noise.
- Keep wiring short and add input capacitors.
Modules are cheap and safe to start with.
REMEMBER
Use a buck converter when the voltage gap is large.Try it yourself
Sketch the circuit on paper first, calculate the values, then build it on a solderless breadboard using a low-voltage supply. Measure with a multimeter before you make anything permanent.
