Build a Clap-Activated Light
A microphone stage triggers the LED.
LED SYMBOLTriangle points from anode to cathode; the arrows show light leaving the part.
Idea
An electret microphone picks up the clap, an amplifier stage boosts it, and a flip-flop toggles the lamp on each clap.
Build notes
- Feed the microphone through a bias resistor of about 10 kilohms from the supply.
- Amplify with an NPN stage or an op-amp, and add a potentiometer for sensitivity.
- Use a 555 bistable or a flip-flop chip to toggle on and off.
- Add a delay of about half a second so echoes do not trigger it twice.
Keep it low voltage. Switch an LED strip with a MOSFET. Loud noises can cause false triggers.
REMEMBER
Add a delay so one clap makes only one toggle.Try it yourself
Sketch the circuit on paper first, calculate the values, then build it on a solderless breadboard using a low-voltage supply. Measure with a multimeter before you make anything permanent.
