Build a Sound-Reactive LED Strip

Audio level controls the strip brightness.

LED SYMBOLTriangle points from anode to cathode; the arrows show light leaving the part.

How it works

A microphone module gives an analogue signal that rises with sound level. The microcontroller reads it many times a second and lights more LEDs, or brighter ones, for louder sound.

Making it look good

  • Take the peak over a short window rather than a single reading.
  • Rise quickly but fall slowly so the lights seem to bounce.
  • Measure the background noise and subtract it, or the strip will glow constantly.

Power an addressable strip from a suitable 5 V supply with a common ground. Splitting the signal into bass, mid and treble with an FFT lets different parts of the strip react to different sounds.

REMEMBER
Fast rise and slow fall make music displays look natural.

Try it yourself

Sketch the circuit on paper first, calculate the values, then build it on a solderless breadboard using a low-voltage supply. Measure with a multimeter before you make anything permanent.
