Build a Desk Lamp with White LEDs
A good heat path keeps a lamp reliable.
LED SYMBOLTriangle points from anode to cathode; the arrows show light leaving the part.
Choosing the light
Pick warm-white or neutral-white LEDs of about 3000 to 4000 K with a colour rendering index of 80 or more. Aim for roughly 400 to 800 lumens, enough to light a desk without glare.
Build
- A 12 V white LED strip cut at the marks, or a power LED module on a heat sink.
- A 12 V adapter rated well above the lamp current, for example 1 A for an 8 W lamp.
- An aluminium angle bar makes a good heat sink and mount.
- A diffuser strip evens out the light.
Mount the LEDs toward the front so they shine on the desk, not in your eyes, and use high-frequency PWM or analogue dimming to avoid flicker.
REMEMBER
Use quality white LEDs and mount them out of your eyes.Try it yourself
Sketch the circuit on paper first, calculate the values, then build it on a solderless breadboard using a low-voltage supply. Measure with a multimeter before you make anything permanent.
